Storefronts:
What You Need
to Know
On March 24, 2026, Shopify activated 5.6 million stores inside ChatGPT by default. Here is what that means, who actually qualifies, and how to make AI recommend your products over competitors.
What Agentic Storefronts actually is
Traditional e-commerce assumes buyers will search for and visit your store. Agentic Commerce removes that assumption entirely. A shopper describes what they need to an AI assistant — ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot — and the AI researches, compares, and surfaces the best match within the conversation. The buyer says yes and the purchase is complete without ever navigating to a website.
Shopify Agentic Storefronts is the infrastructure that makes this possible at scale. One setup in your Admin, and your product catalogue, checkout, and brand information are packaged in a format every major AI platform can read. No custom integration per platform. No new app to install.
"We're making every Shopify store agent-ready by default." — Tobi Lütke, CEO Shopify
The underlying technology is the Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), co-developed by Shopify and Google with participation from Walmart, Target, Etsy, Wayfair, Stripe, and Visa. UCP gives every AI platform a common language for reading product data, which is why a single Shopify setup reaches multiple AI channels simultaneously.
| Dimension | Traditional path | Agentic Commerce |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Google search → your website | AI conversation → product recommendation |
| Decision-making | Buyer researches independently | AI researches on buyer's behalf |
| Checkout | Your website | In-chat or redirect to your checkout |
| Conversion rate | ~0.9% social referral avg | ~7% AI referral (Shopify data) |
| Customer ownership | You own data | You retain full relationship |
Who qualifies — and the nuance most guides miss
Most articles about Agentic Storefronts simply say "US stores only." This is incomplete. The eligibility rules differ by AI platform, and non-US merchants have more options than commonly reported.
| AI Platform | Store location requirement | Non-US stores |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | No restriction — sell to US customers | ✓ Eligible now if shipping to US |
| Google AI Mode / Gemini | Store must be based in the US | ⏳ Early access only |
| Microsoft Copilot | Store must be based in the US | ⏳ Early access only |
A UK-based store shipping to the US qualifies for the ChatGPT channel today. That is 880 million monthly active users — a larger reachable audience than Google Shopping in most merchant categories — at no additional cost.
The five hard eligibility requirements
-
Sell to US customers United States must appear as an active shipping destination
Settings → Shipping and delivery -
Products in Shopify Catalog Every product needs a title, description, image, and price above $0
Settings → Sales Channels → Agentic Storefronts -
Three store policies filled in Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, and Return Policy — none can be blank
Settings → Policies -
Guest checkout enabled Customer accounts set to Optional or Disabled
Settings → Checkout → Customer accounts -
Password protection off Storefront must be publicly accessible
Online Store → Preferences → Password
How to check Admin in 30 seconds
Navigate to Settings → Sales Channels and scroll to the Agentic Storefronts section. If ChatGPT is listed with status "Products are discoverable," your store is live. If you see a "Learn more" banner but no ChatGPT entry, you are identified as potentially eligible but setup is incomplete. If the section does not appear at all, register at shopify.com/chatgpt to be notified when access is granted.
Activation walkthrough
Once eligibility is confirmed, the full setup takes approximately 30 minutes. The most important decision is whether to install the Knowledge Base App — Shopify's companion tool that gives AI platforms structured information about your brand, policies, and FAQs.
- Pricing: $50/month for Basic, Shopify, and Advanced plans. Included free for Shopify Plus.
- What it does: Lets AI platforms answer buyer questions accurately and in your brand's voice, rather than guessing from scraped website text.
- Verdict: For any store with monthly revenue above $3,000, the cost is justified. Without it, AI agents answer questions about your brand using whatever they can find publicly — which may be outdated or off-brand.
The Knowledge Base App has six content areas: Brand Overview, Brand Voice Guidelines, FAQ (minimum 10 questions), Return Policy in plain language, Shipping Information, and Product Care or Usage Guidance. Each section directly shapes how AI represents your brand in a conversation.
Why activation alone is not enough
Enabling Agentic Storefronts takes 30 minutes. Whether AI actually recommends your products over a competitor with a similar catalogue depends entirely on product data quality.
When a buyer asks ChatGPT for "lightweight running shorts for hot-weather training," the AI is not matching keywords. It is using semantic understanding to find products whose descriptions best match the intent. Shopify Catalog processes your data using LLMs before passing it to AI platforms — the quality of that pre-processing depends on your input.
A product described as "men shorts blue L quick-dry" will not surface for "lightweight running shorts for hot-weather training." A product described with use case, fit, and specific attributes will.
Before and after: conversational title rewrites
The same principle applies across every product category. Here are three examples of the transformation needed:
The highest-impact optimisations, ranked
- Rewrite titles for top 20 products — conversational format, use case included. High impact, medium effort.
- Assign Google product category to all products — AI uses this taxonomy to match products to query categories. High impact, low effort.
- Fill Knowledge Base FAQ with 10+ questions — directly shapes AI responses about your brand. High impact, low effort.
- Ensure all products have clean hero images — AI recommendation cards show only the primary image. High impact, low effort.
- Add Metafield attributes per product category — intended use, target user, key benefit, comparison advantage. High impact, high effort.
- Audit variants and merge duplicates — duplicate listings dilute AI recommendation relevance. Medium impact, medium effort.
Post-launch: reading the data
Every order placed through an AI channel appears in your Shopify Admin tagged with its source platform. This gives you clean attribution without third-party analytics tools — which is relevant because GA4 and custom pixels do not fire in agentic storefront checkouts.
Shopify is rolling out an AI Channel Insights report showing the actual queries buyers used when your products were recommended. This data is more valuable than traditional keyword research because it reflects real purchase-intent language from buyers who are already in the market for what you sell.
Known limitations as of April 2026
- GA4 and custom pixels do not fire in agentic checkout — use Admin channel attribution exclusively for AI channel measurement
- App-built product bundles redirect to your storefront for checkout rather than completing in-chat
- Discount codes cannot be entered in agentic checkout — switch to Automatic Discounts for AI channel promotions
- Subscription products redirect to your storefront — not blocked from discovery, just no in-chat checkout
- No local delivery or pickup — standard shipping only in AI checkout
On fees
As of April 2026, there are no additional transaction fees. You pay only standard Shopify payment processing fees. AI channel partners (OpenAI, Google, Microsoft) reserve the right to introduce fees in future. Shopify has confirmed that merchants will receive advance notice and must explicitly opt in before any fee applies.
